LiFePO4 batteries Vs NCM batteries
27 Aug 2021
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NCM) are both members of the lithium-ion battery family. A Li-ion Battery is composed of four main parts: cathode, anode, electrolyte and separator. Battery type is usually named after its cathode materials such as NCM battery or LFP battery. Both of them have become popular nowadays for Solar, Telecom, UPS, Street lighting system, Medical and other applications. Both of them have some pros cons as well.
Advantages of LiFePO4 battery:
Safety: NCM Battery is very risky whereas LifePO4 battery has no risk for fire or explosion.
High temperature sustainability: LFP batteries can handle far wider variations in temperature than other chemistries. It can perform in wide range of temperature (≤60°C). In the other hand, High temperature performance of NCM battery is ordinary (≤45°C).
Long cycle life: The cycle life of NCM is around 1000 where for LifePO4, it is 3000+ @100% DOD.
Warranty: As cycle life is higher, so warranty is also higher for LifePO4 battery compared to NCM Battery as well. So in the long run, LifePO4 battery can be proved ideal.
Full charge condition tolerance: Li-phosphate is more tolerant to full charge conditions and is less stressed than other lithium-ion systems if kept at high voltage for a prolonged time.
Energy required to produce: LFP battery makers insist that a LFP battery requires less amount of energy to be produced compared to a NCM battery, exercising lesser impact onto its environment.
Advantages of NCM Battery:
High energy density: At present NCM batteries are preferred in some specific applications like electric vehicles, because they have lesser space requirement due to the higher energy density.NCM battery features higher power rating and energy density compared to LFP battery due to its higher lithium diffusion rate and electron mobility.
Low price: NCM cell voltage is 3.7V where as LFP is 3.2V, that's why in a battery pack it takes less NCM cells to fulfill, thus the price of the NCM battery pack is little cheaper than LFP. Which attracts some users.
EverExceed manufactures both LifePO4 and NCM batteries which adopts latest technology. So when trying to decide which battery to purchase consider a few things.
1. What application are you using the battery for?
2. Will the battery have to function in high temperature?
3. Is there any budget limitation for the battery?
4. Energy density will be high or low?
Once you have the answers to these questions EverExceed will help you to determine the best battery for you. Let us know your opinion about the above topic. Any question, welcome to contact with us!
